National Healthcare Workers Association (NHCWA) is the proud owner of the Nations first and only Operating Room Technologist and Multi-Skilled Surgical Technician credentials. NHCWA’s Operating Room & Surgical Technologist certification marks are not affiliated with NBSTSA, Recipients of the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (“NBSTSA”), CST certifications do not qualify to sit for NHCWA’s multi-skilled stacked credential examinations. The Certified Operating Room Technologist, Certified Multi-Skilled Surgical Technician (NCORST) certifications are Multi-Skilled certification marks owned by NHCWA. Proper use of the Certified Operating Room Technologist and Certified Multi- Skilled Surgical Technician credentials. Nationally Certified Operating Room and Surgical Technician (NCORST) Nationally Certified Operating Room and Multi-Skilled Surgical Technician (NCMSORST). NHCWA does not offer virtual proctoring. The NCORST exam is offered 4-times a year in January, April, July and October. The NCORST exam is proctored at a testing center. To assure the safety of patients in the OR students from online schools that don’t require mandatory hands-on clinical skills do not qualify to sit for NHCWA’s NCORST exam. NHCWA’s 80/80 bylaw. Once you become a Nationally Certified NCORST you will need to complete at least 80-hours of continuing education each year and work at least 80-hours of paid employment during the last 12 months prior to your certification for your NCORST certification to remain valid and active on the registry.

What does a Nationally Certified Multi-Skilled Operating Room and Surgical Technologists do?

According to the National Operating Technologist Association™ (NORTA™)  A Nationally Certified Operating Room and Surgical Technologists assist with surgeries by passing instruments to surgeons, maintaining sterile fields and safe environment for patients, handling setup procedures, keeping instrument tables  organized, managing operating room supplies, understanding surgical procedures,  handling clean up at the end of the surgeries.

Nationally Certified Multi-Skilled Operating Room and Surgical technologist  usually work in hospitals, spending most of their time in operating rooms. However, surgical technologists are often hired at outpatient centers and at doctor’s offices’ or dentists’ offices.

Who is eligible to sit for the Nationally Certified Multi-Skilled Operating Room and Surgical Technologists certification exam given by the National Healthcare Workers Association and the National Surgical Technologists Association?

NHCWA NCORST Certification Requirements:

One of these requirements must be met:

  • Route 1-Graduation from an NHCWA approved allied health vocational training program. The surgical tech program must be accredited by one of the following accrediting associations CAAHEP,  AMA Accreditation Association, Higher Education Accreditation
  • Route 2- One year of work experience in the field
  • Route 3-Military experience/training in the field
  • Route 4 Reciprocity from another certifying agency

NHCWA Certification Requirements for NCORST Certification:

The following exam and skills requirements are mandatory and must be met for NHCWA certification: The NHCWA requires CPR certification for all medical professionals applying for NHCWA certification.

(In addition check your states requirements for minimum cases some states require an average of 120 cases)

Option 1 Certification Route

Applicants must pass the NCORST exam that consists of 300 questions and have fulfilled the surgical rotation case requirement of 120 cases through their school’s clinical affiliation agreements with area health care facilities 

Certification Route additional option

Applicants must have fulfilled the surgical rotation case requirement of 120 cases through their school’s clinical affiliation agreements with the Surgical Tech Bootcamp. Applicants are required to provide a certificate of completion from the surgical tech bootcamp

Option 2 for Certification Route 2
